Bravebox

The BraveBox Initiative is our response to the cost-of-living crisis, ensuring we reach children living in high-risk households and send them the healing message of ‘you are not alone’.

What is bravebox?

The cost-of-living crisis is a stressful time for many people. For those experiencing domestic abuse, it can increase the risk of emotional and physical harm to the victim and their children. This can leave victims of domestic abuse with no choice but to stay in an unsafe home or face homelessness. The threat of poverty and homelessness, particularly where the victim is responsible for a child, are the predominant barriers to leaving an abusive relationship.

The cost-of-living crisis is exacerbating this issue and we have seen this in data retrieved from referrals and the increase in referrals for support.

We know that domestic abuse isn’t always physical. Perpetrators of domestic abuse are using concerns of financial hardship during the cost-of-living crisis as an extra tool for coercive control. We have seen this in victims having restricted access to money, food, clothes and loss of work and children being frequently absent from school.

We have also monitored through our EdShift Club House Digital Resource that children’s greatest worries are:

Mummy and daddy fighting because of money.

Dad being stressed because he’s always working and there’s not enough money.

I worry about not having enough money for food.

I worry about the school holidays.

To reduce risk The BraveBox initiative will provide schools with:

The BraveBox initiative also provides Police officers who are attending a domestic abuse incident with a BraveBox to give to children if they have been present or witnessed.

The BraveBox includes:

Pocket Sized Safety tips and advice card.

Pocket Sized emergency numbers card.

Positive coping strategies booklet

Positive affirmation cards

Worry Dolls

Fidget Toy

We want to do this to acknowledge that children are victims in their own right, improve their ability to manage the demands of their home environment and reduce the risk of physical and emotional harm.
