Emily’s Story

Name changed to protect identity.

Emily joined In Touch after experiencing domestic abuse within her family. By the time she attended her first session, she had become increasingly isolated and lacked confidence in forming friendships.

Walking into a new group for the first time felt overwhelming.

Initially, Emily preferred to observe rather than take part, quietly engaging in creative activities while watching others around her. Over time, the relaxed environment and shared creative experiences helped her begin building connections with other young people who had experienced similar challenges.

As trust developed, Emily became more willing to share ideas, contribute to discussions and take part in collaborative projects. The group offered opportunities not only to express emotions creatively, but also to experience positive peer relationships in a safe and supportive environment.

Over the following months, Emily’s confidence grew. She became an active member of the group, encouraging others, celebrating their achievements and recognising her own strengths.

Reflecting on her time with EdShift, Emily said the group gave her somewhere she could simply be herself without feeling judged.

For many children and young people affected by domestic abuse, recovery isn’t only about processing trauma. It’s also about rediscovering confidence, connection and a sense of belonging. For Emily, In Touch became an important part of that journey.

Parent quotes:

“It’s the first place they’ve felt safe enough to be themselves.”

“For the first time in a long time, they came home smiling after school.”

“They still have difficult days, but now they know how to talk about what they’re feeling.”

“I don’t feel like I’m the only one anymore. I actually look forward to coming every week.”
